Palettes, oh palettes!

Through and through, makeup palettes make our lives easier. Here are reasons why I love them :

* They’re already a set. We don’t need to buy eyeshadows/blushes/lipcolors one by one, which take so much research and effort. Usually, brands try to group together shades that would go well together, with a theme ( say, neutral, or colorful palette ), or their bestsellers!

* Organization wise, they’re a dream. Instead of thinking on and on on how to organize your makeup, getting more containers, palettes are just…there. They can sit around your table, they can be on top of anything, they don’t disturb the zen, or mess up your room.

* They’re your bestfriends when you don’t want to think too much. When you’re doing your makeup for the day ahead, or playing with eye makeup for a smokin` night look, you just need to pull out your trusty ‘ol palette, and start thinking from the shades available there. You don’t need to stress over which single color would go with what, and be more stressed finding them!

* They’re relatively going to save you some money. Makeup palettes are usually bundled together, with a “bundle”, discounted price attached to it for getting the grouped products together.

* and! You get so much colors to play around, get experimental, and just have fun with!

During the past few years, I’ve collected good makeup palettes, including my prized Make Up For Ever Dany Sanz limited edition palette, my Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Palette, and a whole lot smaller palettes. Right now, I am doing the digital version of “window shopping” for these pretty impressive, and drool-worthy makeup palettes in the market! Check them out :

Sephora Color Play – 5 in 1 II – Fashion Edition

What It Is : Sephora Color Play – 5 in 1 II – Fashion Edition
Inspired by the looks of Shopbop.com, an online destination for fashion-forward women, it is composed of 5 sub-palettes, which can help you achieve 5 different color-schemed looks. These 5 sub-palettes are removable, and can fit inside a compact, which is also included in the set.
Price : $30 ( a $150 value )
Where To Buy : Sephora
Sophie’s Thoughts : Holy smokes, $30 for all of that? That is incredibly a great value for money! You get sooo much colors! One sub-palette consists of 10 eyeshadows, 2 lipcolors, and 1 blush, so multiply it by five, you get 50 eyeshadows, 10 lipcolors, and 5 blushes! I am a little bit dubious on the quality as the price is just too affordable, but for beginners who are excited to play with makeup and be experimental, this will already do! Just remember to get a good eyeshadow primer!

Smashbox Master’s Class Style Files

What it is : Smashbox Master’s Class Style Files
Price : $59 ( a $175 value )
Where to Buy : Sephora
Sophie’s Thoughts: This cute-looking makeup set looks like book sets, or DVD sets. Nice packaging, right? I love it!
This makeup set is composed of three “volumes”, helping you achieve a chic daytime look, and transforming it into night time glamour.

Volume one is the Shadow Palette containing 8 eyeshadow shades, which look very versatile, and basic, but not necessarily plain. Each of the shades look basic, and universally flattering ( I love the choices! ) and I think I can live with this palette alone for eyeshadows. Haha!

Volume two is the Eyeliner Palette which contains cream eyeliners – a mix of staples for everyday, and some bright, sparkling ones for night use. Eye liner pencils are also there for easy, effortless eyelining and lining the waterlines. For the Lip & Cheek Palette, there are two contrasting cheek shades and two juicy lipglosses.

I think this is a nice “volume compilation” for day and night looks!

Although it is a bit expensive ( well, there is already a high price slash off for the product bundle! ) Smashbox is hailed as one of the best makeup brands out there, and this isn’t the only palette. They have so much more!

What It Is : Lorac Box Office Sensation
Price : $56
Where To Buy : Sephora

Sophie’s Thoughts :
A mirrored Traincase, containing a collection of 49 products for the eyes ( 36 shades ) , lips (9), and cheeks (2).

Looking at the shades, they seem to be more of the feminine shades, and they seem to be very wearable. I’ve tried a Lorac eyeshadow palette before and I really love the quality of their eyeshadows, that I would definitely want to get more. This is an amazing package, that looks like a traincase! I really, really like this!

What It Is : Tarte Jewelry Box
Price : $52
Where To Buy : Sephora
Sophie’s Thoughts :

Sephora describes The Jewelry Box as

An exclusive, limited-edition palette packed with 32 new eyeshadows, eight lip glosses, a mineral bronzer, a new shimmering powder, five deluxe long-wearing eyeliners, and a detachable necklace

While the packaging seems a bit bulky, this seems to be your stay-put palettes at home. It’s cute, alright, with all those gold accents!

What made me want this palette? A few months ago, while I promised my friend that we’d go eyeshadow palette shopping in Sephora Canada, I was aiming to give her the Urban Decay Naked Palette. I almost stomped my feet of dismay ( ok, that action’s just in my mind okay! I dont throw tantrums in public LOL! ) when I was told that the Urban Decay Naked Palette was out of stock. We bought the Tarte TEN Limited Edition Collector’s Palette, and fast forward a month after my friend just could not stop raving about it. Before we bought it, I inspected and swatched the eyeshadows and they are pigmented, alright! So with that, I am basing my judgement on their previous palette with this one, that I am currently lemming for ! With so much products at that price, this one is definitely a steal already!

What It is : Urban Decay Naked Palette
Price : $48
Where To Buy : Sephora

Sophie’s Thoughts :
Ugh. This is my dream palette that’s always out of stock. As a lover of neutrals, I have everything I need here. I’ve seen it up close and saw the beautiful neutral brown shades here, and I am going to get one of this as part of my palette collection! Ahh!!! A palette full of nudes and neutrals really gets me going!

Ahhh!!! So many palettes that I am quite lemming for. I seriously want all of them, but I only have one face and one pair of eyes!!! How about you, what are you lemming for?

I asked my tito to get the Naked palette for me, but he told me it’s out of stock and got me the Sephora Color Play instead. My eyes went wide when I saw the picture he sent me!

(But I still want the Naked palette. Haha!)

I feel guilty – I have 3 out of 5 of these *sheepish*. I have the Tarte, Lorac and Naked palettes. Out of the 3, the Tarte shadows are the least pigmented and least desirable in terms of texture. I’m not saying they’re bad – just that compared to the other 2, their quality is underwhelming. Pigmentation is comparable to the Smashbox Muse palette but texture is a bit harder. The mattes are soft though but can be powdery.

The gloss palette, eyeliners and bronzer/highlighter included in the palette are wonderful though and the fact that the palette is paraben free evens out the landscape for me :)

I have packaging issues with Lorac and Tarte as well.

Overall, having these is a double edged sword – sometimes opening them is a chore (Tarte and Lorac) and picking which colors to use is even more overwhelming so I tend to reach for my trios and quads instead lol!
