I was very much intrigued with the sprout of health drinks in the market. I see ampalaya ( bitter gourd ) shakes, barley drinks that my friend Dee‘s mom religiously prepares for her kids in the morning, and the latest recommendation of Dee to me, wheatgrass.

Reading up on wheatgrass piqued my curiosity big time. Wheatgrass happens to be the young grass shoots of wheatberry, that contains high concentrations of chlorophyll, active enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, etc. Wheatgrass has a rich concentration of chlorophyll that gives the body more oxygen, and boasts of so much benefits, according to Fat Free Kitchen,

* Wheatgrass energizes and reduces fatigue.
* It is a appetite suppressant.
* Wheatgrass juice improves metabolism.
* It improves digestion.
* Wheatgrass juice enriches the blood, removes blood disorders, & lowers blood pressure
* Wheatgrass juice is antibacterial and helps cleanse the liver
* It prevents tooth decay
* It is good for skin problems and improves complexion, treats acne, and removes acne scars.
* Wheatgrass juice keeps hair from graying & removes dandruff.
* It boosts the immune system, calms the nervous system and promotes regularity & helps fight constipation.
* The chlorophyll present in wheatgrass will wash drug deposits from the body, neutralize toxins in the body, help purify the liver, and prevent ageing. The chlorophyll also stabilises blood sugar levels.

I’ve also read from various websites that wheatgrass neutralizes body odor, bad breath, regularize bowel movement, and even give an insomniac a good night’s sleep. I’ve also read from various forums that wheatgrass helped alleviate their back pain. Goodness, just too much benefits that it just sounds too good to be true! But with the promising results, I was very much enticed, no, I caved into temptation and tried wheatgrass!

Want to know about my adventures?

When I did some research about Wheatgrass, I stumbled upon the brand Easy Pha-Max. Easy Pha-Max is wheatgrass in powdered form. Easy Pha-Max boasts of its Indoor Organic Aeroponic Cultivation (IOAC),

Aeroponic farming means that our wheatgrass is grown in the air without the use of soil or water as a base as in traditional farming or hydroponics. This allows the roots to grow and stay sterile making it possible for the company to process and include the roots of wheatgrass in every sachet of wheatgrass powder.

I immediately ordered a few boxes of Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass Powder ( sachet of 30′s for P 990.00 ) and Wheatgrass with Honey ( 15 sachets for P 590.00 ) , just in case I could not tolerate the taste of wheatgrass.

Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass With Honey

As I received my order, I immediately scheduled my wheatgrass drinking time. Wheatgrass is said to be consumed with an empty stomach , so as to immediately go to our bloodstream. Another reason for such is that wheatgrass is said not to mix well with food. With that, I chose my drinking times to be early in the morning, and during bedtime.

I began drinking Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass with Honey in the morning, to start my day. I drink this with cold water as it is suggested for the powdered wheatgrass to be mixed with lukewarm or cold water – the enzymes would die if you use hot water with it. The taste is really, really nice. It’s like green tea, sweetened with honey. My dad loves the taste so much that he calls it, “Starbucks drink.” haha!

Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass Powder

The Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass Powder, on the other hand, is a sachet with 2 grams full of wheatgrass ( Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass With Honey is 18g of honey and 2g of wheatgrass , for reference ) , and as I mix it with water, it just tastes…like grass. The taste was neutral, not disgusting, but I’m just not totally fond of it. I choose to drink this for bedtime, as I do not need something sweet at night.

Trying Fresh Wheatgrass
Okay, with all the powdered wheatgrass I was trying, I could not help but want to taste the real thing. I’ve been researching about growing fresh wheatgrass, but with my busy lifestyle, I can only dream of that. I heard that Bizu offered wheatgrass shots for 75.00php for a shotglass, so with my dinner being just the restaurant beside Bizu, I made a promise to myself that I would visit Bizu a few minutes before I go home to try to get a dose of fresh wheatgrass.

Wheatgrass tray + juicer!

making my wheatgrass drink!

As I cheerfully asked for a shot of wheatgrass, I was very curious on how they made the wheatgrass drink. I see the girl from Bizu get a tray of wheatgrass that was displayed outside, cut half of it, placed it on a metal bowl, washed them, and finally, placed them in the tube that extracts the juice.

cheers!

Finally, a shotglass’ worth of wheatgrass. That was about the time when I carefully asked, “how does it taste?” The answer given to me by the Bizu girl was, “sweet.” as she smiled to me. With a nervous Sophie peering in the frothy drink in the shotglass, I told myself, “cheers,” and started drinking it.

Halfway during drinking straight, my tastebuds started to be curious as I dared taste fresh wheatgrass. Turns out – it’s way, way better! A burst of freshness, that I could never quite explain with words just washed over me. It was fresh, frothy, pure, and the yummiest of all the greens that I’ve ever tried! I just loved the aftertaste, as I lingered in it for quite a while, even after eating the slice of orange that came with the wheatgrass shot. It just tasted so…healthy, like I was being cleansed from the inside!

Going back to the restaurant, friends heard about my rave, and even smelled my very fragrant breath ( hahaha! ). With that, I marched back to Bizu with two new followers who were game to try wheatgrass as well! Boy, these two were pleased and weren’t disappointed at all!

With that experience, I would definitely go back to Bizu, from time to time, whenever it’s near a resto I am dining in for a delightful wheatgrass shot. I’ve even contemplated buying trays of fresh wheatgrass and buying that expensive juicer!

As for fresh wheatgrass, I have researched that there were places selling fresh wheatgrass trays, and even juicers. The juicers, on the other hand, don’t come in cheap – they are priced from 6,000 php ( as told by a friend, being sold in S&R) and as high as 10 to 12,000 php. The more affordable ( hmm still not quite!) ones are manual ones, while the automatic ones are priced higher.

I think I’d be needing more research and more convincing ( to myself, haha! ) that I should be getting that juicer. It would be a very, very happy day if that day comes!

Wheatgrass Benefits – My Experience
Amongst the benefits of wheatgrass displayed in various websites, here are the benefits that I have personally experienced with it.

Wheatgrass as a laxative?
With all the promising benefits and detox claims of wheatgrass, one would think that bowel movements will be more frequent as more waste is eliminated. In this case, I did not feel that wheatgrass acted as a laxative at all. It regulated my bowel movements, but it was no match for psyllium husk’s way of “easing the bad stuff out.”

If you ask me, wheatgrass made me release more “gas.” ( if you know what I mean! )

Wheatgrass and Sleep

One significant difference that I have noticed over the course of my wheatgrass intake was that my sleeping habits were getting better. Before, I would be all aggravated and tortured that no matter how stressed I was, I wouldn’t get sleepy, and the vicious cycle goes on ( I wake up late, stay up late, wake up late, be all stressed, and cranky, etc ) . A week of taking wheatgrass helped me sleep better as I get really sleepy when it’s already bedtime. I would immediately drift to sleep as I finish my work and blogging early, and wake up quite nicely.

My mom also agrees, and asks me to make her a glass of Wheatgrass with Honey every night, as she loves how deep and good her sleep is whenever she’d drink this.

Wheatgrass and Acne
I’ve been reading ( decrypt : googling, and googling ) that wheatgrass can alleviate acne and even psoriasis. My personal interpretation is that with wheatgrass giving our body such an abundance source of oxygen, there’d be no room for anaerobic bacteria ( the bacteria that thrives in the skin because of lack of oxygen ) or the detoxification of the blood would be related to acne. In my case, I felt that my skin improved with my wheatgrass intake – I didn’t feel my skin to be really, really oily anymore, and acne breakouts were significantly lessened. My sisters noticed the difference too – it’s because I wasn’t complaining!

I also tried spraying a mixture of wheatgrass and water to my scalp with the hopes that it would alleviate my seborrheic dermatitis.

Wheatgrass and Well-Being
With all the detoxification and burst of oxygen, all the promises of health by wheatgrass still has me wishing and hoping that one day, I’d come out a healthy person. Honestly, I see myself as someone who gets tired easily, and well, a weakling. I seriously need exercise, but I’m still finding the time to do so. With that, I rely on supplements for now. While wheatgrass still doesn’t make me feel more energized, the reason that after 3 weeks, I am reordering my Easy Pha-Max supplies is because I was able to see short-term results, with my improved sleeping habits and acne relief. I am still very optimistic as I will continue drinking wheatgrass for a few months to see if this is the drink for me.

So, any wheatgrass stories? I’d more than love to hear from you!

  9. (April 23rd, 2010 at 11:28 am)

Sophie, I’ve tried wheatgrass at the Saturday Salcedo Market. Freshly made and it’s, sorry to say it, GROSS! It really tasted like grass that I wanted to puke. Do the others put sweeteners or other flavors in it to make it taste better?

  10. (April 23rd, 2010 at 11:37 am)

Oh, by the way, I just found a box of Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass with Honey here at home just now and drank a sachet. Now that tasted good (a bit too sweet pa nga)!

Hi Nikki! I don’t know, but the one in Bizu didnt seem to have added sweeteners! Yep, the Wheatgrass with Honey is the best bet for those who’d like to try wheatgrass, minus the fear of the…taste. lol! I was surprised to actually like the freshly extracted wheatgrass!~

  12. (April 23rd, 2010 at 3:51 pm)

Super informative post, Sophie! You know I’ve been meaning to try this, lalu na when I read that Hollywood celebs (Joli)use this for weight loss after pregnancy, but I didn’t dare ask Big Chill or Bizu because I thought it will be super expensive, and because I’m afraid of its taste!!! But with your exp, and all the research you’ve made, I’m sold to bits and try it after office! Thank you for sharing, sis! Galing mo. =)

Thanks for the review Sophie, love reading how the supposed benefits worked (or didn’t work) for you. I plan to take this for my terrible, terrible sleeping habits. And for acne! The gas part scares me a bit though. I’m a fan too of psyllium husk, and oatmeal. :)

    (April 24th, 2010 at 8:15 am)

Hi Sophie! It’s good of you to feature wheatgrass on your blog. I have been drinking it (easyphamax brand) since I was diagnosed with cancer last year and so far it has been very good for my health and I think it also helped with the successful operation I had last month well coupled with a very healthy diet of course :)

  15. The Beautynomist:
    (April 24th, 2010 at 4:01 pm)

Ida : It’s okay, it’s not a big deal re the gas. But my sister told me that psyllium wasn’t working as smoothly for her when she started taking in wheatgrass. Psyllium really eases out all that we want out e. haha!

Lanie : that’s great news! I’m so happy that you are recovering quite nicely :)

  16. (April 24th, 2010 at 4:06 pm)

Hi Sophie! We used to grow out own wheatgrass here at home. It’s much cheaper than getting the juice or sachets, but yun nga lang, hassle. We stopped for a while now since my mom’s kinda tamad about it. My uncle has major lung problems because of smoking, and he has oxygen tanks at home for when he can’t breathe properly. When he drank wheatgrass, he needed the tank less, and when they checked the oxygen level in his blood, the numbers went up. It is kinda gross when you drink it straight up, like really grassy, but I’ve heard that others mix it with juice or put it smoothies, and it’s all great :)

    (April 27th, 2010 at 9:23 am)

Hi Denise! :) Ive been wanting go grow my own wheatgras but then I’m afraid it might have molds because of my negligence, so I have the powdered form here. So nice ! :) Yeah, it is indeed grassy. haha! That’s great for your uncle, that his situation was alleviated by taking wheatgrass :)

  18. Karina:
    (April 27th, 2010 at 5:42 pm)

Hi Sophie, was there an effect when you sprayed wheatgrass on your scalp? :) Psoriasis is hereditary in my family and it seems as though I’m the lucky girl who is likely to get it. Thanks for this entry, I’m encouraged to try drinking wheatgrass!

  19. The Beautynomist:
    (April 27th, 2010 at 6:36 pm)

Hi Karina! Well, right now my scalp is not really acting up so much. I’ve reduced using Clobex on my scalp, and I tried spraying wheatgrass on my scalp. The effect is ok-ok, but I think this needs to be done twice a week. It hasn’t totally gotten rid of my problem yet as this is sebhorrheic dermatitis ( allergic reaction-induced ) so I think this is to be done regularly. :)

My mother-in-law sells EasyPhamax’s Wheatgrass for the longest time. She’s quite active with the company. She’s out on a quest to help people get better and live better with wheatgrass.
It was only recently that I became a convert. That was when I got sick. I’ve been taking a shot everyday, and haven’t been sick. With no vitamins at that!
Let me know if you want to order from her ;)

  22. Jenn:
    (May 6th, 2010 at 11:54 pm)

Been having wheatgrass for months now. :) I stopped for a while when I ran out of supplies :) ) I order the one in the barrel, mas mura compared to the individually packed ones. What i noticed was ang bilis mag oil yung scalp ko. Mga 12 hours or less lang after I take a bath. It was always a problem every Saturday, I have classes starting 8am, and then family dinner at night. I always end up looking like I didn’t take a bath. :) ) I’m back to drinking wheatgrass and it’s all okay now. :D

I started drinking wheatgrass just a couple of days a go.. the immediate benefit i noticed is that it gives me the feeling of being “full”ot really hungry… I take it in the morning and I don’t feel hungry even by around 2pm in the afternoon… I still eat lunch but has significantly reduced the amount… and that’s because I really don’t feel hungry. I dind’t take it to lose weight, actually was not into losing weight, I took it to boost my immune system since I get colds easily… surprisingly it helps me control my weight also. But I agree with one of the post, when I had it first, I was a bit nauseous.
