I totally agree when people say that sleep is considered a luxury nowadays. Some people are just so busy with their lives, too busy to sleep, in that case.

With that, one must know that sleep is VERY important. Cell regeneration and reparation occurs while sleeping, sleeping 8 hours a day ( and within the normal sleeping time ) gives health to our heart, our mind, and keeps our body weight just the way it should be. Good sleep also improves our memory, and keeps us focused on our daily studies/work/endeavors. Oh, I could just imagine those call center agents who work on graveyard shifts. Their sleep cycles are totally ruined. :(

In my case, it’s stress that’s been hindering my sleep. Ever felt that you’re just so tired, and just so willing to drift to sleep as soon as you return to the comforts of your bed? With stress, it’s a horrible scenario. It makes you tired, but it also keeps you from drifting to dreamland. So, what happens? You are wide awake, all tired, desperate to sleep. You might drift into sleep after an aggravating waiting time of an hour or so – but what time is it? You wake up either late, or still tired, and your days just go on not the way you want them to be. Your mind is in total unrest, all clogged, and unwilling to cooperate to produce masterpieces.

With that, I decided to go to my local drugstore and get Sleepasil. What is Sleepasil?

Sleepasil contains a special blend of all natural ingredients – Melatonin, Valerian Root, Chamomile, and Hops – that help you relax and fall asleep.

Sleepasil is an herbal supplement that helps you become sleepy, get to sleep when you want to, but wake up without feeling groggy, but refreshed! Looking at the first two ingredients – melatonin and Valerian Root are definitely sleep inducers.

Melatonin ( source : Wikipedia.org )
In humans, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, a gland about the size of a pea, located in the center of the brain but outside the blood-brain barrier. The melatonin signal forms part of the system that regulates the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature, but it is the central nervous system (more specifically, the suprachiasmatic nuclei, SCN) that controls the daily cycle in most components of the paracrine and endocrine systems[26][27] rather than the melatonin signal (as was once postulated).

Valerian Root ( source : Wikipedia.org )
Valerian has uses in herbal medicine as a sedative. The main current use of valerian is as a remedy for insomnia, with a recent meta-analysis providing some evidence of effectiveness.[11] It has been recommended[citation needed] for epilepsy but that is not supported by research (although valproic acid—an analogue of one of Valerian’s constituents, valeric acid—is used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug). Valerian root generally does not lose effectiveness over time.

Chamomile is known with having chamomile tea that is usually taken to soothe the mind, and hops, just like Valerian, is used to treat anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. Sounds like a mean sleep inducing capsule!

What’s my story with Sleepasil?

Well, when I decided that I wanted to sleep early ( and quit sleeping 1 am everyday ), I started taking a capsule of Sleepasil an hour before my desired sleep-time. Little by little, I felt relaxed, and soon, eyelids felt heavy and ready for some shut-eye. After saying my prayers, I instantly drifted to sleep. Bliss, I tell ya. Sleep is just the best thing in the world!

On a sidetrack – one thing that’s just so strange about saying my prayers, and asking to wake up early the next day, is that I usually don’t know, and I am totally unaware that I wake up actually early the next day! From the night before’s Sleepasil, I don’t feel groggy as normally I would with sleep-inducing drugs ( such as my emergency pill Ternelax, which is a muscle relaxant, that gives a side effect of feeling sleepy and groggy the day after )

I continued to take Sleepasil for three days, and so far, so good. I’m very satisfied with my new sleeping habits, and as soon as I feel that it’s becoming regular, I am going to stop taking Sleepasil and try sleeping on my own. I just need my Circadian Rhythm fixed! How I wish I were like my sister who gets to sleep on 10pm everyday, and just wake up around 6:30 am everyday!

With all that dreamy promises of Sleepasil, and even if it is branded as a harmless, herbal supplement, there are also restrictions, on who can, or can’t take it :

Do not drive or operate heavy equipment while taking this product. This product is not recommended for adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and those taking cortisones and steroids. Avoid this product if you have kidney problems. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Although I would not recommend taking anything just to go to sleep, Sleepasil just might be the most harmless alternative to taking sleeping pills. You can still try alot of things prior to getting medication – clearing your mind an hour prior to sleeping, drinking a glass of warm milk, or a hot shower an hour or two before sleeping, and getting away from electronics ( computers and TV! ) an hour before sleeping to help facilitate a good sleeping environment.

So, what’s your sleep story?

I take Melatonin to put me to sleep on days where I’m still wide awake at 3 am. I’ve been staying away from it for a week now and I’ve had some success sleeping without it an hour earlier. How much for a bottle of Sleepasil?
