Makeup is truly art. There definitely are no boundaries in color. MAC Cosmetics collaborates with three brilliant artists, with their own interpretation of fall,
MAC celebrates the idea of the artist in every shape and stripe…makeup as art form. We’ve selected three individuals who exemplify this idea. Bold, Heroic, Big ; Giggly, Playful, Clever ; Dramatic, Original, Abstract ; Fall’09 as seen by Richard Phillips, Maira Kalman, and , Marilyn Minter. Be inspired!
FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY RICHARD PHILLIPS, PAINTER
Using the expert skills of a photo-retoucher, Richard subjected his own painting to a M·A·C makeover with the new eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks. A collection of Eye Shadow quads, Lipsticks, Lipglass, and The Perfect Cheek Blush just leap off the canvas!
Amongst the collection, I was able get my hands on some of the items. The eyeshadow quads are absolutely divine, and I love the smoky eye as a sultry look for fall, that’s for sure ( I always want to have an excuse to do smoky eye makeup haha! )

I have the eyeshadow quad in Photo Realism. The shades included are Photo Realism ( Gold Shimmer with Gold Pearl, Frost in Texture ) , Fresh Approach ( Cool Mint Green, Veluxe Pearl in Texture ), Image Maker ( Dirty Grey Green, Frost in Texture ) and Grey Range ( Deep Blue Green, Veluxe Pearl in Texture ). I love it that the darkest shade, Grey Range, can be applied on the bottom of the eyelids, to be applied gradually from dark to light, and to add some effects, a lighter color on the crease, perhaps Image Maker or Fresh Approach, and a nice highlighter in Photo Realism. I also like the combo, that either Image Maker or Fresh Approach to be applied on the entire lid, with Grey Range as crease color. Very fashion-show makeup!

Full Body Lipstick ( Lustre ) is a very blunt deep red plum. It’s good for those who want to use reds but are afraid to use those shades that are screaming attention. This is a good subtle, and classy plum color.

Front Lit, on the other hand, is a light white yellow frosty lipstick. It’s good to be applied on top of anything matte, making it sheeny.
If there’s anything about fall that I love aside from smoky eyes, it’s the purple color. On Display is a lipglass that gives any pinkish lipstick a bit of a darker hue – perhaps a sexier pout, deviating from the wholesome pink lip!

The Perfect Cheek blush, I think, is more suitable for those who have very fair complexion, as its rosiness can pull a very sophisticated quasi-contour, and subtle matte flush on the cheeks. I see this on print ads all the time, and it’s just so timeless. I tried it on darker foundation ( sometimes I’d like to pretend I’m tanned haha! ), and it looked muddy and out of place.

FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY MAIRA KALMAN, ILLUSTRATOR
Famous for her whimsical visual diaries, Maira Kalman performed a bit of magic with M·A·C’s new Technakohl Eye Liners and Eye Shadows, instantly drafting a captivating look at a stranger.
I feel that these really colorful colors from Maira Kalman reminds us that make up is very similar to painting – take every chance to use beautiful colors and let the face be your blank canvass – turn it into something bright, colorful, happy, or whatever your mood maybe. Maira Kalman’s mood is definitely happy and whimsical with her joyful colors in the collection.

With her very interesting technakohl eyeliners, I am very much challenged to use Full of Fuschia ( deep blue magenta ) and Obviously Orange ( dirty coral ) on my eyes one day, and just let the sunshiny-ness of the colors turn my mood into a child-like one.

I’ve always loved yellow eyeshadows because they look so retro-refreshing, so I love Crest the Wave ( rich yellow, in frost texture ). It’s a beautiful pale shade of golden yellow.

FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY MARILYN MINTER, PHOTOGRAPHER
Minter’s erotic imagery zooms in on a succulently wet, red lip, a dappled, sequined eye, or a silverized stiletto splashing in the mud. Pigments in Push the Edge and Copper or Gold Glitter have the power to make anyone feel like they WILL be seen – and desired. That gift for sparkle is one reason Minter was a natural for the high-key glitter pigments in Make-Up

I have two pigments from this collection, and I think that they’d be perfect for avant garde makeup. Brash and Bold is just bloody red and very multi-purpose for any kind of art interpretation, and Gold Glitters is just great for just about adding some oomph to a look, with beautiful, macroglitters.
Overall, I encourage everyone to check out all the shades of the MAC Make Up Art Cosmetics Collection, and see for yourself which colors you can relate yourselves with. After all, makeup is an interpretation and expression of ourselves!
