Mineral makeup will always be my first love. Until now, it’s the only thing that first touches my skin because of the nature of my skin – very acne and blemish prone, open pores, and being oily. My skin is highly sensitive to pore-clogging products, so I could have none of the traditional makeup, specially with foundation. With eyeshadow and blushes, sometimes I can, as long as it’s mineral makeup that touches my skin first, much like a base.
Colorescience is a luxe mineral makeup brand that was created by Diane Ranger, also founder of Bare Escentuals. This brand has so much promise, and has even earned Dr. Zein Obagi‘s thumbs up because it truly compliments dermatologist treatments, instead of hindering the rejuvenative process, in which what traditional makeup really does – ruin the dermatologists’ work by clogging pores, and damaging the skin. The science of today is just amazing – whoever thought that there would be some kind of makeup that would actually help skin get better and not damage it?
Thing is, prior to makeup application, my must-apply product is a makeup primer. Why? It’s because primers help “resurface” the skin, because skin needs to be smooth in texture as you apply makeup – if it is uneven, then foundation application would be uneven as well, texture wise. For open pores that are somewhat depressed, depressed scars, fine lines or even oily skin, skin primers are their best bet for a good texture, specially silicon-based ones, which really “fill-in” the gaps. Silicon based primers like Smashbox are just perfect whenever you use them for special occasions, but there are times, and certain skin types that break out from it. It is also not too advisable for daily use, but then it definitely works wonders on the skin. As I have started going out and wearing makeup everyday here, I’ve been using it every single day. I was looking for an alternative – something that doesn’t have silicone since my skin would be on the verge of breakouts again if I use it everyday.
Just this month, I was able to try Colorescience Mineral Makeup. Primers are sort of their pride because they can immediately be used after laser procedures, and I was willing to give it a shot on how it’d fare on my skin- because only silicon-based primers, in the past, gave the satisfaction I needed in makeup application.
I was able to try Colorescience Wild to Mild Skin Bronzer. It’s a primer, and bronzer in one, that is great for sunburnt skin, or those who have uneven skin tones. It’s medium in shade, so it naturally darkened my color by a little bit, and it’s bombarded with soothing ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide ( skin soothing and UVA and UVB protection ), oats and beta glucan ( to reduce redness ), patented rice peptides ( to heal burns), blue algae extract ( feeds and tightens the skin ), beta E and vitamin E ( that nourishes the skin, ), and the blend of green tea, lavender, and tangerine, that I’ve been luxuriously sniffing as I apply this product that makes it feel so darn soothing.
Effect? The effect, surprisingly, is just like silicone-based primers. It resurfaced my skin into smoothness, and I was very impressed. The darkness of this shade evened out my skin tone big time, and made my mineral makeup foundation application much, much better. There is definitely a huge difference when you apply makeup without primer, as compared when you apply it prior. The surface is definitely flawless, smooth, and almost perfect with this! Makeup stayed long enough, for sure!
But then, digging through the ingredient list, I was able to see why it worked wonders on me – organo-silicone. Still the silicone word. But then, this kind of silicone does not clog pores. Good enough for my weary skin.
Overall, I super love this product! I’ve been using it everyday, and it hasn’t been the cause of my breakouts. After my PCA skin peeling session roughly a week ago, my skin had some breakouts because of the dirt that resurfaced – and this product did not aggravate my condition, and my pores are still safely not clogged. Whew. I look forward to trying the other two primers that Colorescience has - Line Tamer ( for lines ), and Chocolate Mousse ( for oily, and acne prone skin. )
Life is fabulous, specially if you want some amazing products to be developed, and they’re just there in the blink of an eye!
Note : Colorescience is soon to be launched in the Philippines. Count months! Yay!
