I also am not in the habit of using mascara every day (if I do, I'll use Neutrogena's feather lash mascara, as it amplifies my lashes but still looks like I'm not wearing anything-- most mascara looks more obvious on me) so I have a hard time spending lots of money on something I'll use a few times over a 3-6 month period.
