My Greatest Dream as of the Moment…

…TO ATTEND THE NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!!!

Well, it’s gonna remain a dream since I’m stuck with work for the rest of the year. Still bargaining with dad if I can go abroad to the trade fair ( tsk, still business ) this coming April.

Anyways, I gotta sleep early. Maybe I’d dream of strutting a sexy pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos with some exotic outfit from Betsey Johnson on the runway in my dreams.

Insects in my Lipstick..Insects in my Stawberry Milk-O….

After reading about an article about crushed insects being used as dyes ( to be exact, red dye ), I was surprised because I actually didn’t feel mortified, disgusted , or whatever. The article is summed up as FDA wanting the food manufacturers or cosmetics manufacturers to properly label their products if they do contain cochineal extract, or carminic acid. The article states that the said extract or food/cosmetic additive triggers allergic reaction from others, and they’re really not labelled properly, labelled as “color added”. Continue reading

My Squeaky Clean Face Thinking About Poverty

It was a Saturday night at home for me - didn’t feel like going out with this gloomy atmosphere. Just after I did my night routine - cleanse, exfoliate ( just because it’s a Saturday ), tone, treat, and moisturize with my favorite water-based products, I still could not sleep, for I have been thinking about the Wowowee Tragedy. Watching TV awhile ago, it can be seen that alot of people were saddened by what happened. More than saddened. People were in grief. And I could hear the howling winds outside my window empathizing with the miserable outcome of this day.

Tragic Poverty & My Diminishing Marginal Utility for Fondness for Makeup

Something happened today that made me really stricken. Wowowee, the country’s leading noontime variety show, was supposed to have its Anniversary Celebration today, but was postponed because of the death that the event caused - 79 people. Isn’t it ironic, dont you think? ( Alanis Morisette might have sung this if she knew about this ).

Wowowee is the Philippines’ daily noontime savior for poor people - it gives them fleeting entertainment, taking some of the hardships of their lives away for two hours everyday. When I meant savior, I didn’t mean that in the poetic sense like I described above. Wowowee gives so much hope to the poverty-stricken people in the country by giving out cash ( and I mean , BIG cash! , thanks to the sponsors) , dollars ( thanks to the OFW’s who watch via TFC ), and even homes ( thanks again to their sponsors. ). With Wowowee, fruit vendors can become instant millionaires before they can even finish wiping their sweats off their faces, street children can have a good month’s worth of food supply and educational scholarship - a good future for the selected some , and so forth. Wowowee has been regarded by the hopeless poor people as their saving grace - the only thing that can alleviate them from their miserable state, one vehicle that would zoom them way above the poverty line. So everyday, ABS-CBN is flocked with thousands of poor people lining up to participate in Wowowee. Well, that’s about it.

Ode to My Favorite Thing

Found this passionate poem that I wrote while I was still in college. My professor told us to write what we really were passionate about, and I was surprised that only I wrote about this topic! ( Ehem..guess what? ) I also wrote love poems but they were useless. At least, my subject also loved me back , as compared to stupid-unrequited-love-poems!

The Beauty and Ugliness of Tradeoffs

The Beauty and Ugliness of Tradeoffs.

One of the coolest terms that I have learned in my Economics was the term, “tradeoff”. It was THE word that made me truly feel that I was an Economist…tradeoff, tradeoff tradeoff!! haha :) While my uninspired classmates were trying to grasp the essence of the word, I was daydreaming about my future speech in the WTO forum, “See, ladies and gentlemen, there is clearly a tradeoff between …..” Talk about ambition, huh!

Tradeoff is a matter of choice. When you choose to do something, you also lose an opportunity of doing another thing. In its essence, tradeoff means, you can’t have both. It’s like choosing to spend your moolah on the latest shade of NARS blush - the seductive and raw beauty of Cactus Flower! You benefit, swoon, and hastily apply and check yourself in the mirror, and sigh on how gorgeous you look, while avoiding to look in your wallet since it’s broke, broke broke :P See the tradeoff there? Your wallet had clearly a diet, while your makeup train case gained more weight ( duh, it prefers to be voluptruous rather than stick thin, thank you. )

“Yes, my darling creme blush, you’re certainly worth every penny, I’m happy with my tradeoff. I lost a few pounds just to adopt you, my darling!” ( this is such a demented statement from moi. Take note, I didn’t STARVE myself now, I just ate LESS .)

Is Vanity a Rational Behavior?

During our first few Microeconomics classes, we were taught the term Rational Behavior. Now, it sounded a whole lot complicated than spelling those two simple words. Rational behavior explains that every person maximizes his utility, given the constraints.

It was quite jargonic for me sometime earlier, relating utility to utility bills? ( bummer, that was embarrassing ), and rational to ratio ( hey, I was straight outta highschool! )
It took me sometime to find out that utility was actually the amount of satisfaction someone gets from a thing, and to behave rationally, as a human being ( check ), one must maximize his/her utility, within the budget.

Can vanity, my greatest sin, pass as a rational behavior of humans? Let’s see.

My Vain Economic Awakening

One cold, airconditioned day on my Basic Economics class, I heard my soft-spoken, yet cute (it’s a she! she’s adorable ) professor passionately profess, “Economics is everywhere. It IS human behavior. You can relate it to just about anything - business, law, and even entertainment and beauty.”

Fine, fine, it totally made sense that economics was sooo insync with business and law. Businesses are a part of the economy, and laws, believe it or not, have economic underlyings before they’re made. I googled them, found some links useful, and shrugged them off. Upon searching for the term “Beauty and Economics “, I was surprised that no one ever really “heavily” touched on this matter. All I found was “Beauty Pageants and Economics” (huh? I don’t like the sound of this ).

So there, it basically started from there. Upon having scarce resources on the matter that I was most curious about, I just made my own dreamworld. Personally relating economic theories to all my vain behavior.

I finished that Basic Economics course with a smile on my face. Beauty, and Economics, are like colors shades of makeup. Some makeup artists, narrow-minded as they are, stick to the “rules” , and impose that “this shade will not match with this shade ” thing. However, some cool makeup artists like the late Kevyn Aucoin ( God Bless his genius soul ) didn’t follow the mainstream and experimented - and later found out that there are no rules in makeup. Beauty and Economics are mistaken to be clashing shades of eyeshadow and lipgloss , but will actually work ONLY if you do it well! and think hard!!! :)

So next time you walk down the street, and see a friend buying coffee, try to think of an Economic thought that would fit her. Sounds nerdy, but hey, it actually helps your grades! :P

Me, Economics, and Vanity

I’ve been horribly vain all my life. Experimental with skin care and makeup since age 11, had my first breaktout at age 13, made the mortal mistake of popping my zits, and doomed with the eternal task of repairing my flawed skin until I see fit. If there was someone who thought about makeup all the time, it was me. Wishlist ? The lipgloss that Kate Hudson wore on the magazine cover of Cosmo. Dream occupation? Makeup artist. Favorite store at the mall? anywhere there’s makeup, skin care and hair products. Favorite topic to talk to friends? Makeup, that they only remember sending me an SMS when they are needing advice on what good makeup to buy. Favorite morning activity? Cleanse, tone, treat, and moisturize.

See, I’d rather sleep in a pile of makeup ( combination includes NARS, MAC, Prescriptives, Shu Uemura, VMV, and more ) even if I’ll get scratches from their square edges rather than sleeping on a matress. I’d scrimp on buying clothes for makeup. I’d rather starve myself with yogurt for lunch to be able to afford my latest product that I’m eyeing on. Even if I had my skin a little flawed on my younger years ( which I’ll discuss later on ), I’m willing to splurge to conceal, camouflage and repair it to the most I can do. I wanna look like Kate Hudson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Image hosting by Photobucket

Kate’s the greatest! I would trade all my third world glory to be her! Well, it’s a hard bargain, but I try! :P

Everyone who knew me got the shock of their lives when they heard that I was taking up Economics. ” Huwaaat? Economics? You wanna be the President of this country one day? “ Sheesh! I was told that Business Management would be more acceptable to me since I was a born businesswoman - boldly selling makeup and skin care here and there with my guards down - heck, why would I be shy about earning money? It’s a dignified business! No one understood the fascination I had for the law of supply and demand, the blatant misconceptions of international trade, and the IS-LM curve . Everyone thought that Economics was all about being patriotic for our country, being stuck in the academe for life, either studying more wormy math and teaching, or being the mathsy person bombarded with equations so complex I can only stare at them, donate a frozen smile, and walk away.

Little did they know that I had a secret dreamworld of economics - filled with beautiful faces, beautifully made-up people, and a whole buncha products that make you look better, and definitely feel better! ( The magnet of mirrors are people who just applied makeup! ). I see economics with colorful eyeshadow and lip palettes, oil-free foundations, non-alcohol toners, SPF, and microdermabrasion! Whee!

Okay, now that actually sounded insane.

Well, indeed, Economics is everywhere! And for me, it’s on the cosmetics counter, skin care product centres, salons, and even the nearest online store! ( think Ebay! haha :) ) I am so convinced that every behavior of people, is influenced by economics. No exception, even the beauty industry and its consumers ( ahem, ahem ) !

In my next post, I shall write a story on how I came about this crazy idea that two clashing ideas are actually long lost sorority, giggling sisters.
